A1 certificate

A1-attestation

What is an A1 certificate?

An A1 certificate proves that you pay social security contributions in a particular country. You can only pay social security contributions in one country, this is how Europe has determined it. Hence, an A1 attestation can ensure exemption from these contributions in another country.

How to obtain an A1 certificate

An A1 certificate must be issued by the social security authority in your country. If you are self-employed, you can request this certificate directly from the relevant authority. If you are an employee, your employer is typically responsible for obtaining the A1 certificate on your behalf. However, the process may vary between countries, so it is essential to verify the specific requirements in advance before commencing work in France.

Use of the A1 certificate:

When you work in a country other than your country of residence, you must be able to present an A1 certificate to the authorities. This provides them with clear proof that you are already paying social security contributions in another EU country. The A1 certificate is therefore an essential document for anyone working within the EU.

Situations in which the A1 form applies:

  • Posted workers: Temporarily working in another EU country.
  • Self-employed individuals: Carrying out temporary work in another EU country.
  • Working in multiple countries: The legislation of the country of residence or the employer's country applies.
  • Officials, seafarers, aircraft crew, and EU contractors: Specific rules apply depending on the profession.
