BTP-card
What is a BTP-card?
A BTP card is a personal, secure identification card for workers in the construction sector. Employees must carry this card at all times while working on-site. It was introduced to prevent illegal employment on construction sites. The employer is responsible for ensuring that all employees have a valid BTP card.
Ensure that the card is valid for each secondment of your employees to France to avoid unexpected fines and additional costs.

Validity Period
Once obtained, a BTP card remains valid for five consecutive years. If the construction project is completed or the work is finished, the card can be deactivated. However, if the employee is seconded to another site across the border, the card can be reactivated.
Who Needs a BTP Card?
As an employer, you are not required to obtain a BTP card for the following employees:
- Workers on construction sites in roles such as architects, property experts, surveyors, health and safety coordinators, drivers, delivery personnel, and land surveyors.
- Employees who do not physically work on a construction site, even if they are permanently present (e.g., payroll administrators, risk managers, IT maintenance staff).
Interns are also exempt, provided their mentor can present proof of their status.
Can I Work Without a BTP Card?
NO but, a temporary certificate can replace the professional identification card. This certificate is issued upon completion of the BTP card application and payment process. It serves as proof of the worker’s status while awaiting the official BTP card.
No BTP Card? That Comes at a Cost!
Failure to provide the required BTP card for employees can result in fines of up to €4,000 per person. In cases of repeat offenses within two years, this penalty may increase to €8,000. It is therefore crucial to ensure all employees have a valid BTP card.
